Shipments of household goods and personal effects are usually allowed duty free entry, as long as they have been owned and used for at least 12 months prior to importation. To move your items to South Africa, you will need a customs clearance form and a packing list, Britannia can help you with the appropriate import documentation. You will also need a residence permit (permanent or temporary) and a work permit to move to South Africa.

  • Customs clearance - It generally takes 7 to 10 days for customs clearance and delivery. The time taken to clear goods through customs can be affected by government policy, X-raying of goods, physical inspection, volume of traffic and the levy of any import duties or taxes.

The team were absolutely fantastic. They were polite and professional throughout and took the stress away from us on moving day. They took care of everything and even found our son’s Christmas elves which was a huge help and helped settle our son into our new house.

Think there are a few things pre-move day that would help.

  • A general email to say what to expect, perhaps a video that shows what will happen. Moving house is stressful enough and this would’ve helped take the edge off.
  • A text message to confirm what time the team is arriving, potentially with the team member names included - we feel this would be a nice personalised touch.

BUT - on the actual day the team were brilliant and should be praised for their efforts.
